Deze kamer is genoemd naar Karel de Grote . Karel was keizer van het Heilige Roomse Rijk en woonde voornamelijk in Aken waar ook zijn graf te vinden is.  Karel had vele bezittingen in de buurt van zijn Akense Palts en heerste ook over het huidige Zuid-Limburg. Hij was de overgrootvader van Koningin Gerberga van Saksen, de beroemde eigenaresse van Villa de Proosdij.

Louis spent his younger years in exile in England (By sea). After he died in 936 AD. Chr. had been crowned King of France, in 939 he assisted his Duke Giselbert of Lorraine in his fight against King Otto I of Germany. His help came too late, Giselbert was killed in action. Lodewijk promptly married Giselbert's widow (and also Otto's sister) Gerberga van Saksen. Louis thus added Gerberga's possessions, including her hunting lodge in Klimmen, under his authority and with the marriage laid the foundation for peace between the French and German empires.

Jean came from a French patrician family from the Marne Valley. He was appointed Proost from the Monastery of Reims to manage the donation of Queen Gerberga from Meerssen. Jean thus became the steward of the estate in Klimmen. His appointment as Proost was in the year 1364. He went down in history as Bouwproost, because he ordered the construction of the Basilica in Meersen. It can still be seen in all its glory.
