Jean came from a French patrician family from the Marne Valley. He was appointed Proost from the Monastery of Reims to manage the donation of Queen Gerberga from Meerssen. He went down in history as Bouwproost, because he ordered the construction of the Basilica in Meersen. It can still be seen in all its glory.
